Manchester United's young talent is being targeted by European giants, with Real Madrid in the leading position.

Manchester United are at risk of losing one of the most promising talents from their youth academy. 15-year-old JJ Gabriel is reportedly being targeted by a number of European giants, with Real Madrid said to be leading the race for the Red Devils' young winger.

A report from The Guardian on Thursday 17 September stated that Gabriel has communicated his intention to cancel his registered player contract at Manchester United. This development has thrown the teenager's future at Old Trafford into serious doubt.

Gabriel first attracted attention from top European clubs after showcasing his ability within the Manchester United academy. Alongside Real Madrid, Barcelona are also understood to hold an interest, while Bayern Munich continue to monitor the youngster's progress closely.

Gabriel's desire to leave is driven by ambitions to advance his career elsewhere in Europe. Critically for any potential cross-border transfer, he holds an Irish passport through his father which grants him European Union citizenship - a key eligibility factor for moves to other continental clubs.

Manchester United have been taken aback by Gabriel's decision. That said, internal figures at the club had already anticipated this possibility once widespread interest emerged in the player, who first joined United's academy system at the age of 11.

United have not abandoned hope of retaining the winger. However, regulations governing underage players mean the situation will follow a structured formal process.

Gabriel will turn 16 next month. Upon reaching this age he will become eligible to sign an academy scholarship contract, while a full professional contract can only be signed 12 months after that.

Amid this uncertainty, Real Madrid have presented a far more attractive development pathway. Should he complete a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, Gabriel stands to gain senior match exposure far earlier via Real Madrid Castilla.

Castilla is Real Madrid's official reserve side, which competes in the third tier of the Spanish football pyramid. This route would enable Gabriel to gain competitive senior playing experience at a younger age than would be possible within Manchester United's academy structure.

In an ironic twist, Gabriel was on the verge of making club history for Manchester United imminently. He had been lined up to become the youngest ever senior competitive debutant for the club in their Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton on Wednesday.

This opportunity was scrapped immediately after Gabriel notified the club of his wish to leave, shifting all public discussion away from his on-pitch potential and onto the future of his career.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has called for all parties to handle the Gabriel situation with extreme care.

"We all have to be really careful with this whole situation. He's just a child. He is 15 years old," Carrick stated following United's 2-3 defeat against Brighton.

Carrick noted that young player development extends far beyond raw football ability. Personal environment, individual wellbeing, and the weight of public attention placed on a young athlete must all be properly accounted for.

"From both my own and the club's perspective, we have a duty to protect our young players, their welfare, their mental state, and the level of public exposure they receive. That is something we must be extremely mindful of throughout this entire situation," he added.

Gabriel was already a well known figure within the United first team setup. He had previously been invited to train with the senior squad, and featured for the first team in a pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm.

In recent weeks the young winger had also been attending first team training sessions on a regular basis. This progress demonstrates just how highly Gabriel was regarded at Manchester United, already impressing senior coaching staff despite only being 15 years old.
