Brighton's Comeback Crushes Manchester United's 2-Goal Advantage in the English League Cup

Manchester United have exited the Carabao Cup, also known as the English League Cup, at an early stage. A two-goal lead at Old Trafford collapsed into a 2-3 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round on Thursday.

Michael Carrick's squad enjoyed the perfect start, netting two goals within the opening 10 minutes. Shea Lacey opened the scoring before Mason Mount doubled United's advantage.

Brighton then mounted a full comeback, turning the match around through goals from Charalampos Kostoulas, Pascal Gross, and Maxim De Cuyper.

This defeat marks another early elimination for Manchester United from the English League Cup. Last season, the Red Devils also failed to progress far in the competition after suffering an upset loss to Grimsby Town in the second round.

The result at Old Trafford also extends United's poor run of form. Prior to this match, the side had just fallen 0-1 to Manchester City in the Premier League.

United began the fixture aggressively. Lacey emerged as the early standout, putting the home side ahead in the 8th minute.

After receiving a pass from Youri Tielemans on the right edge of the penalty box, Lacey unleashed a powerful strike that beat Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele.

Just two minutes later, United stretched their lead to 2-0. Steele managed to parry an effort from Marcus Rashford, but the rebound fell directly to Mason Mount who converted cleanly to double the home advantage.

Despite falling two goals behind, Brighton did not lose their composure. The away side gradually ramped up pressure, creating dangerous chances through the movement of Malick Yalcouye and Pascal Gross.

Brighton finally pulled a goal back just before half time. Jaouen Hadjam delivered a deep cross that completely evaded United's defensive line.

Charalampos Kostoulas capitalised on this lapse, beating Karl Darlow to cut the deficit to 1-2.

Kostoulas' goal shifted the entire momentum of the match. Brighton played with far greater confidence after the break, while United struggled to retain the control they had shown in the opening stages.

The visitors' sustained pressure paid off in the 65th minute. Luka Vuskovic intercepted Diogo Dalot's pass before laying the ball off to Gross.

With no meaningful resistance, the Brighton midfielder beat Darlow comfortably to level the score at 2-2.

Brighton's comeback was not yet complete. Only five minutes later, they took the lead.

Kostoulas burst forward down United's right defensive flank before playing a pass. The ball deflected off a United defender and dropped perfectly for Maxim De Cuyper.

The Belgian player did not waste the opportunity. De Cuyper slotted the ball home easily to put Brighton 3-2 ahead.

United attempted to fight back with a series of substitutions, bringing on Kobbie Mainoo, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, and Joshua Zirkzee to change the course of the match.

However, no further goals were scored before the final whistle. Brighton held on to their 3-2 lead to secure their spot in the next round of the English League Cup.
