Defeated by Persib Bandung, Is It True That FC Seoul Fielded Their Second-Tier Players?

FC Seoul did not field their full strength squad when hosting Persib Bandung in the opening Group E fixture of the 2026-2027 AFC Champions League Two (ACL 2). Head coach Kim Gi-dong's rotation decision initially sparked reports that second-string players, including youth prospects from the Osan High School academy system, would be granted playing time.

Kim Gi-dong had outlined the reasoning for this rotation ahead of kick-off against Persib. The 54-year-old coach was forced to manage player fitness amid the congested K League 1 schedule, while also addressing squad depth issues caused by injuries and player movements during the summer transfer window.

However, he emphasised that rotation did not mean his side was lowering their competitive ambitions.

"I cannot disclose every detail here. But regardless, players who have featured heavily in domestic league matches require proper rest," Kim Gi-dong stated during the pre-match press conference against Persib.

This fixture against Persib was both FC Seoul's home match and their first Asian competition game of the season. For this reason, Kim still set a winning target despite needing to adjust his line-up.

Rumours regarding the Osan High School youth players first circulated in the lead-up to the match. Osan High School forms part of FC Seoul's youth development pipeline, with the majority of its players falling within the U-18 age bracket.

FC Seoul's rotation was not purely motivated by a desire to give young players match experience. The state of the squad forced Kim to find the most practical balance between experienced senior players and emerging young talent.

This pressure became increasingly visible after FC Seoul completed a gruelling run of domestic fixtures. During their critical 2-1 away victory over Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on K League 1 Matchweek 29, Kim only had one usable outfield substitute available for the entire match.

Jung Hyun-woo was only introduced in the 82nd minute to replace Son Jeong-beom. This situation illustrates just how restricted FC Seoul's options are when dividing resources between domestic and continental competition.

Kim was not in a position to rotate all of his first choice players at once. Combining veteran experience with the energy of young prospects became the only workable solution available.

"We are not in a situation where we can swap out the entire squad. That is why we have prepared a mix of experienced players and youth prospects that can complement each other and operate cohesively on the pitch," he explained.

FC Seoul Rotation Backfires As Side Suffers Defeat To Persib

Ultimately, Kim's rotation call did not deliver victory for FC Seoul. Persib instead departed Seoul World Cup Stadium with all three points, after Julio Cesar scored the only goal of the match in the 5th minute.

This early strike forced FC Seoul to chase the game for almost the full 90 minutes. The hosts pushed repeatedly for an equaliser, but Persib successfully protected their narrow lead until the final whistle.

This 0-1 defeat marked a disappointing opening result for FC Seoul in ACL 2 Group E. For Persib meanwhile, the victory provides strong positive momentum at the start of their 2026-2027 Asian continental campaign.

FC Seoul's rotation decision highlights the unique challenge facing clubs competing simultaneously in domestic and continental competition. With a thin squad at his disposal, Kim Gi-dong must strike a delicate balance between managing the workload of his key players and remaining competitive in every fixture. This balance was not successfully achieved when they faced Persib.
