Tiger Woods Hits Golf Ball at Liberty National, Is This a Sign He Will Soon Return to Tournaments?

Tiger Woods is hitting golf balls once again. For the 15-time major champion working through a lengthy return process to competitive play, this simple sight at the driving range marks a notable development.

Woods was spotted practicing at Liberty National Golf Club, New Jersey on Tuesday 15 September. Footage circulating on social media represents Woods' first public appearance striking a golf ball since his legal incident back in March.

This moment occurred while Woods was attending the NEXUS Cup, an exclusive amateur team tournament limited to just 18 foursomes. Launched in 2019, this event is organised by his own TGR Foundation.  

Woods' attendance this year had been shrouded in uncertainty amid the ongoing legal case he was facing. But once on site at Liberty National, Woods picked up a golf club once more, offering a small glimpse into the current state of his game.

"I can hit pretty much every type of shot," Woods stated.

This brief comment does not mean Woods is immediately ready to return to professional tournament play. However, it confirms that golf activity remains ongoing, and his ability to strike the ball is still an active part of his recovery process.

Woods has not competed in a professional tournament since the 2024 Open Championship. The road back to competitive golf remains difficult, following seven separate back surgeries the golfer has undergone.

Severe lower right leg injuries sustained in his 2021 car crash have also continued to delay Woods' return. For this reason, every sighting of Woods holding a golf club draws intense attention from fans.

Liberty National carries additional meaning in this story. This course is scheduled to host the 2027 BMW Championship. This PGA Tour event will run 16-22 August, and will act as the penultimate tournament in the FedExCup playoff series.

This New Jersey venue is no stranger to top tier golf events. Previously, Liberty National hosted the 2017 Presidents Cup and the 2019 FedExCup Playoffs.

"We are extremely excited to bring the PGA Tour's best players back to Liberty National for the BMW Championship," stated WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments Vince Pellegrino when the venue was announced in 2023.

"This course is very familiar with the high stakes pressure of FedExCup Playoffs, and we know this venue will deliver an unmatched experience for our players and our fans."

Off the golf course, Woods recently concluded legal proceedings following his 27 March crash on Jupiter Island, Florida. The SUV he was operating rolled over after colliding with a trailer.

The legal process extended over several months. On 2 September, Woods entered a no contest plea to charges of reckless driving and refusal to submit a urine test. As part of the plea agreement, the DUI charge was dismissed, while Woods' driving license was suspended for five years.

Attention has now shifted back to golf. The footage of Woods at Liberty National does not provide any confirmation of when he will return to professional tournament play, but it does show that striking golf balls has once again become part of his daily routine.

For Woods, a comeback does not need to begin under the bright spotlight of a major tournament. Instead, this journey may well first reveal itself on a quiet driving range, one single shot at a time.
