Kylian Mbappe has spoken publicly regarding the viral meme portraying him as a dictator. The Real Madrid star acknowledged that on one hand, the meme can be regarded as a light joke. However on the other side, this type of comparison demonstrates a clear lack of political and humanitarian awareness.

The widely shared meme depicts Mbappe wearing a senior military officer uniform. The exact origin of this edited image has not been confirmed, but the portrayal spread rapidly across social media platforms and triggered widespread speculation about the motivations behind the meme.

Mbappe accepts that online culture regularly uses professional footballers as material for casual jokes. However, he argues that clear boundaries are crossed when a joke begins associating an athlete with historical figures responsible for mass human suffering.

"On one level, I understand this was made casually and was never intended to be taken seriously. But this does still reveal a lack of political and humanitarian awareness from the people creating and sharing it," Mbappe stated in an interview with French sports media outlet L'Equipe.

One popular theory for the meme's emergence ties it to a 2024 controversy involving Mbappe, when he filed a legal complaint against a kebab shop owner for using his name to market one of their sandwich items.

Other speculation links the meme to Mbappe's immense influence within global football, both during his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and in his current role at Real Madrid.

For Mbappe, this issue is not about personal offence or the scale of his fame. He takes objection to his public image being equated to dictators with well-documented historical records of systematic violence and mass human hardship.

"To be compared to people who murdered others, who inflicted misery upon millions of human beings? I have never done anything remotely close to that in my entire life," Mbappe said.

This statement explains why Mbappe chose to issue a formal response to the meme. While he does not reject the humorous element entirely, he is requesting that historical context be respected when making public comparisons.

Mbappe was also questioned about the "Mobutu" nickname used by his France national team teammate Ousmane Dembele. This nickname references Mobutu Sese Seko, the dictator who ruled the Democratic Republic of Congo -- later renamed Zaire during his regime -- from 1965 to 1997.

He described the nickname from Dembele as harmless internal team banter, confirming that Dembele had first seen the joke on social media.

"That's just how Ousmane is. He found it online! He was only messing around," Mbappe explained.

Mbappe's public response comes amid a run of strong positive form for the player at Real Madrid.

As his global profile continues to rise, the 27-year-old forward remains under constant and intense scrutiny across social media platforms.

Despite this, he maintains that humour must always have limits, particularly when it references dark historical events and the real suffering of millions of people.
