Lamine Yamal no longer speaks like a young player merely hoping to break into the elite ranks. Ahead of the 2026 Ballon d'Or announcement, the Barcelona star has openly positioned himself alongside Kylian Mbappe as the two best players in the world right now.
This statement has heated up the race for football's most prestigious individual award. Yamal is not only claiming he operates on the same level as Mbappe, but also argues his achievements across the full season make him the deserving winner.
"In my view, Mbappe and I are the two best players in the world," Yamal told Movistar, in remarks cited by beIN Sports on Monday.

When judging by trophies won, Yamal holds an extremely difficult argument to refute. He helped Barcelona retain their La Liga title before leading Spain to World Cup glory earlier this summer.
These two major honours form the foundation of Yamal's case for the Ballon d'Or. The 19-year-old believes success lifting silverware with both his club and national team carries substantial weight when selecting the award recipient.
"I truly believe that when talking about the best players on the planet, it comes down to the two of us. And this year, I deserve to win this award because of everything I have claimed," Yamal stated.
This is exactly what makes the contest between Yamal and Mbappe so compelling. Mbappe may post far more eye-catching individual statistics, but Yamal holds a clear advantage in collective team achievements.
Mbappe delivered an outstanding personal campaign. The France national team captain finished as top scorer across La Liga, the UEFA Champions League and the World Cup. This remarkable goalscoring productivity keeps him a very serious threat in the 2026 Ballon d'Or race. The catch, however, is that Mbappe's individual form failed to deliver any major trophies for Real Madrid last season.
Yamal had previously struck a far more cautious tone. He acknowledged he held a chance at winning the Ballon d'Or after what he called an "incredible" season, but had stated he would not beg voters to cast their ballots in his favour.
That stance has now shifted to unashamed open confidence. Yamal maintains there is no need to hide behind false humility when discussing his odds of winning the award.
The race has grown even more complicated with PSG also emerging as a major factor. Ousmane Dembele, Yamal's former Barcelona teammate and the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, has publicly stated the award should once again go to a Paris Saint-Germain player this year.
PSG hold strong credentials after successfully retaining their Champions League title. This achievement has put multiple players from the French club back among the leading award candidates.
Harry Kane also remains firmly in contention. The Bayern Munich striker and England national team captain is also listed as one of the top hopefuls for the 2026 Ballon d'Or.
Even so, the head-to-head duel between Yamal and Mbappe remains one of the biggest storylines building towards the awards night. Yamal carries the weight of a La Liga and World Cup trophy, while Mbappe offers unrivalled goalscoring dominance across football's biggest stages.
Ultimately this debate will be decided by the Ballon d'Or voting panel. All competing arguments will be settled when the world's best player award is revealed at the ceremony in London on 26 October 2026.
