Indonesia national team head coach John Herdman has chosen not to make grand promises to Garuda supporters ahead of the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup kicking off.

After the Indonesian national side failed to meet expectations at last month's 2026 AFF Cup, Herdman confirmed that the only guarantee his squad can give is to give every bit of their ability throughout the tournament.

"I believe the promise we can make is that we will give everything we have. That is the one and only thing we can promise the fans," stated Herdman during the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup broadcast rights announcement event at SCTV Tower, Jakarta, Monday 14 September 2026.

This remark reaffirmed Herdman's stance that Indonesia will not hold anything back during their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 campaign. The English head coach is demanding full commitment from every player whenever they step onto the pitch.

Indonesia Drawn In Same Group As Malaysia And Singapore

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to be held from 24 September to 5 October.

Indonesia is hosting Division 1 fixtures, with matches played across two venues: Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK) in Jakarta, and Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung Regency.

The Indonesian national team is placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Malaysia and Singapore. Meanwhile Group B consists of Vietnam, Pakistan, Thailand and the Philippines.

All Group A matches will be hosted at SUGBK, while all Group B fixtures will take place at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium.

Indonesia will open their campaign against Singapore on 25 September at SUGBK.

Following that, the Garuda squad are scheduled to face Malaysia on 28 September, before closing the group stage against Bangladesh on 1 October.

This opening match against Singapore will be the first chance for Herdman and his players to deliver a response after their disappointing results at the 2026 AFF Cup.

Herdman: Players Always Respect The Badge On Their Jersey

Herdman assessed that the commitment of Indonesia's national team players has already been visible through their attitude while on international duty.

He confirmed that players, coaching staff and supporters all have their respective roles to support the Garuda squad's campaign.

"I believe this team, these players, always step out with full respect for the badge on the jersey. They always give everything on the pitch, the staff give everything behind the scenes, and we know the supporters give everything inside the stadium," he added.

For this reason, Herdman chooses only to address matters that are within his team's control. He will not give any guarantees regarding final match outcomes.

As he explained, football carries many factors that cannot be fully controlled by players or coaches, including referee decisions and elements of luck.

John Herdman Will Not Promise Results

Herdman openly stated that he cannot guarantee Indonesia will win the title, or even win every match at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

"You cannot promise things that you cannot control. You cannot control football's luck, you cannot control referee decisions," remarked the former Canada national team head coach.

Instead, Herdman's focus is ensuring the players uphold every aspect that they can influence.

Match intensity, focus levels and full commitment for the full duration of every game are all non-negotiable standards according to him.

"What you can control is your effort, your focus, and your commitment. That is exactly what our players will hold themselves accountable for throughout this entire tournament," he added.

The 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup will be an opportunity for Indonesia to rebuild confidence in front of their home supporters.

Playing the entire group stage at home gives the Garuda squad the advantage of direct backing from the Indonesian public. At the same time, they face formidable opposition that cannot be underestimated, especially Malaysia and Singapore.

For Herdman, the first target is not making grand public promises. He wants Indonesia to prove their commitment through their performances on the pitch.

Should the players deliver on this promise, positive results at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup are expected to follow.
