Jakarta - Mauro Zijlstra faces a new challenge with Arema FC for the 2026/2027 Super League season. The 21-year-old young striker has been loaned out by Persija Jakarta to Singo Edan with one critical opportunity: to earn more playing time while proving his capabilities at the same time.
Persija officially announced Mauro's loan move on Saturday 22 August 2026. This decision means the striker will not be included in Persija's squad for the 2026/2027 campaign, however his registered status as a Macan Kemayoran player remains active.
Mauro is still under contract with Persija for a further two seasons. For this reason, this loan spell to Arema is correctly classified as part of the player's development pathway, rather than an arrangement to permanently release him.

Lack of playing time became Mauro's core issue over the second half of the previous season. After being signed by Persija midway through the 2025/2026 campaign, he only featured in four matches: against Bali United, PSM Makassar, Persik Kediri and Semen Padang.
Across these four appearances, Mauro was only trusted in the starting line-up on one occasion. That start came when Persija travelled to face Persik on Super League matchweek 33, where the side secured a 3-1 away victory.
Mauro's limited match minutes cannot be separated from his injury struggles. He sustained a hamstring injury that required an approximate three month full recovery period.
This situation created the need for Mauro to find a new platform to rebuild his competitive match rhythm. Arema now becomes the environment for the striker to gain greater match experience and regular playing opportunities.
That said, joining Arema does not guarantee Mauro an automatic first team place. He will still have to outcompete fellow squad members and prove he deserves the trust of the coaching staff.
This is precisely what makes Mauro's upcoming mission so notable.
He is not only required to stabilise his physical condition following his injury-interrupted period. Mauro must also rediscover his attacking sharpness, improve his match consistency, and capitalise on every single opportunity he is handed.
For their part, Persija expect this loan period will support Mauro's professional development. Persija manager retired Air Marshal Ardhi Tjahjoko emphasised that the absolute priority for the player right now is securing regular match minutes to improve his performance level.
"Right now the most important thing is for Mauro to get playing time so he can keep improving his performances," Ardhi stated.
Persija also confirmed they will maintain full monitoring of Mauro's progress throughout his entire loan spell. The club expects their contracted player will return at the end of the period with upgraded on-pitch abilities.
For Mauro, therefore, the 2026/2027 season is not simply a story of swapping shirts from Persija to Arema. This is a defining chance to repay the faith that has been placed in him.
After losing career momentum due to injury and restricted playing opportunities, Mauro now has a fresh stage to demonstrate his full potential.
If he can perform consistently and secure sufficient match minutes with Arema, this loan move could become a critical turning point in his career trajectory. Mauro holds the opportunity to return to Persija at the end of the spell as a more mature, competition-ready player.
Now it is time for Mauro Zijlstra to prove himself.
