Jonatan Christie opened his campaign at the 2026 BWF World Championships with a victory. The Indonesian men's singles shuttler defeated German representative Matthias Kicklitz in straight games 21-15, 21-14 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi, India on Tuesday.

The match ran for approximately 40 minutes. This result sends Jonatan through to the round of 32, and also marks him as the first Indonesian athlete to take to the court on the second day of the 2026 BWF World Championships.

As the third seed, Jonatan acknowledged that opening matches always require an adjustment period. For this reason, he was not only focused on securing the win, but also working to lock in his playing rhythm and familiarise himself with the arena conditions.

"Overall this went exactly as I intended. I wanted to find my rhythm, I wanted to get a proper feel for how the stadium plays," Jonatan stated after the match, as quoted from an official PBSI press release.

Jonatan Fell Behind By A Large Margin Early

Kicklitz applied heavy pressure right from the start of the first game. The German shuttler opened up a 4-0 lead before Jonatan managed to narrow the gap to 2-4.

Kicklitz then pulled away once more, at one point holding a commanding 15-7 advantage. Jonatan gradually began to settle into the match, cutting the deficit down to 18-13.

Momentum then swung fully to the Indonesian. Jonatan reeled off consecutive points to bring the score to 19-15, before closing out the first game 21-15.

An almost identical pattern played out in the second game. Kicklitz once again got a fast start, taking an early 3-0 lead before extending it to 7-1.

Jonatan fought back to close the gap to 11-9, only for Kicklitz to pull clear once more to 14-9.

After trailing 16-10, Jonatan finally took full control of the match. The 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medallist ran through the remaining points to seal the second game 21-14.

"Praise God, I am grateful I could get through today and put in a solid performance. I felt I played decently well out there," Jonatan said.

Adaptation Proved Critical For The Opening Fixture

This win over Kicklitz highlighted Jonatan's ability to adjust when matches do not unfold as planned from the first point.

He noted that opening matches at any tournament always require adjustments for multiple variables, including shuttlecock behaviour and on-court conditions.

"You always have to make adjustments in the first match of every tournament. Adjust for the shuttlecock, how the court plays, the wind drift on court," Jonatan explained.

Having passed this first test, Jonatan now prepares for the round of 32. This victory gives the third seed a solid starting foundation as he pursues deeper runs at the New Delhi tournament.

For Indonesia, Jonatan's win also kicks off the campaign for all national representatives competing on the tournament's second day.

Alongside Jonatan, three other Indonesian pairs are scheduled for action: Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, Bimo Prasetyo/Arlya Nabila Thesya Munggaran, and Marwan Faza/Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata.
