The Norway men's national football team recorded the largest single ranking jump of any nation following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Standout performances from Erling Haaland and his teammates at the tournament hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada lifted Norway 12 full positions in the official FIFA World Rankings.

"Norway climbs 12 places after reaching the quarter-final stage for the first time in the nation's history," FIFA confirmed in an official update published on the governing body's website on Monday.

Prior to the 2026 World Cup, Norway sat at 31st position in the global rankings. Following their tournament run, they have jumped to 19th place worldwide.

This climb marks one of the biggest shifts in the latest FIFA rankings release, and clearly demonstrates the impact a deep run at football's largest global tournament can have on a national side's standing.

Haaland And Norway Deliver Impressive Tournament Form

Norway opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a dominant display. Haaland and the squad secured a 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opening group stage fixture.

This result established strong momentum for Norway. They followed up with a second consecutive win, beating Senegal 3-2 in their second group match.

With two wins secured, Norway held a very comfortable position to qualify for the knockout rounds.

In their final group stage match however, Norway were outmatched by France, falling to a 1-4 defeat.

Despite the loss to France, their earlier two victories were sufficient to send Norway through to the knockout phase as runners-up of Group I.

Consistent performances then carried the Scandinavian side through successive knockout rounds, all the way to the quarter-final stage.

This achievement is fully historic, marking the very first time Norway have ever reached the final 8 of the FIFA World Cup.

The Haaland Generation Has Elevated Norway's Standing

Norway's tournament success showed this side is not dependent on one individual player. That said, Haaland remained the team's focal point and stood out for his match-winning contribution in attack.

This current generation of Norwegian players have proven they possess the quality to compete against the top national sides at world level. This progress is directly reflected in their updated FIFA ranking position.

Climbing from 31st to 19th place has moved Norway significantly closer to the elite tier of nations in the FIFA rankings table.

This jump also perfectly illustrates how the World Cup can act as a transformative momentum event that completely reshapes a national team's reputation and standing on the international stage.

Ghana And Paraguay Also Record Major Ranking Jumps

Norway was not the only nation to register a significant ranking improvement following the 2026 World Cup.

Ghana climbed 8 places, now sitting at 65th position in the global rankings.

Paraguay meanwhile rose 7 positions to 34th place. This climb followed their run to the last 16, which included a historic upset victory over Germany in the round of 32.

All these ranking shifts highlight just how heavily World Cup match results influence the FIFA World Rankings system.

Wins against higher ranked opposition deliver a huge points boost for any nation. Conversely, poor tournament performances can also see teams drop multiple ranking positions.
