Indonesia's U-16 women's national team will face a tough test when they take on Thailand in the 2026 Srikandi Merdeka Cup final. Head coach Timo Scheunemann views this match not solely as an opportunity to lift the trophy, but also as a chance to build experience and test the mentality of the young Garuda Pertiwi squad.
Indonesia secured their spot in the final after beating Jordan 3-0 in the semi-final fixture held at the Supersoccer Arena in Kudus, Central Java on Friday.
In the final match, Kesya Arabela and her teammates will go up against Thailand, who advanced after a dominant 5-1 victory over Malaysia.

For Timo, facing a side of Thailand's calibre is exactly the kind of experience his squad requires during their long-term player development process.
"Getting to play Thailand in the coming days will be an incredible experience, and that is exactly what we are pursuing here," Timo Scheunemann stated during the official press conference.
The 52-year-old head coach emphasised that developing high quality players is the core primary target. For this reason, winning the tournament title is not the only measure of success for the team.
"I will always prioritise developing players first. That is the long term vision, always the long term. Even if we do end up winning this cup, that trophy is just a bonus," Timo added.
Timo Prioritises Competitive Match Experience For His Players
According to Timo, his Indonesian squad needs far more competitive match minutes against high difficulty opposition.
Kesya Arabela and the rest of the team have already gained valuable experience facing tough opponents at the 2026 AFF U-16 Cup, where they competed against Australia and Vietnam.
Timo assessed that Thailand stands as one of the leading powers in Southeast Asian women's football, alongside Vietnam and Australia.
As such, this final match will provide a clear benchmark for the actual ability level of Indonesia's young players when competing against higher quality opposition.
Matches of this nature help young players build courage and competitive confidence from an early stage in their careers.
Final Acts As The Team's Mentality Test
For Timo, gaining experience against strong opposition is an investment for the future. He wants his players to become accustomed to performing under pressure, especially during critical high-stakes phases of matches.
This fixture against Thailand also presents the coaching staff with an opportunity to measure the squad's progress following a series of international competitive assignments.
Indonesia head into the final with high confidence following their convincing 3-0 win against Jordan. However, Thailand will pose a completely different challenge, boasting greater overall technical quality and match experience.
Timo is not asking his players to only chase the final result. Instead, he wants them to learn how to respond under pressure, read the flow of the game, and maintain full focus when competing against stronger opposition.
