Haaland Becomes the Hero as Manchester City Silences MU in the Manchester Derby

Manchester City successfully claimed all three points away at Manchester United after winning the Manchester Derby in matchweek 4 of the 2026/27 English Premier League.

Playing at Old Trafford in the early hours of Monday 14 September 2026 WIB, City were forced to play the majority of the match with 10 men. Despite this setback, Enzo Maresca's side were able to hold on to their 1-0 lead courtesy of an Erling Haaland goal.

Manchester City were reduced to 10 men in the 22nd minute, after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card. This left The Cityzens playing at a numerical disadvantage for over an hour of the fixture.

This result lifts Manchester City into 2nd place in the provisional league standings with 12 points. Meanwhile, according to the official Premier League website, Manchester United sit in 13th position having accumulated just 4 points so far this season.

The fixture got off to a fiery start right from kick-off. Both Manchester United and Manchester City came out aggressively, resulting in multiple physical duels across the pitch.

City's misfortune struck in the 22nd minute. Bruno Fernandes committed an initial foul on Foden, before the City midfielder retaliated by kicking Fernandes in the stomach.

The referee did not hesitate to show Foden a red card. This decision was reviewed and subsequently upheld by VAR, confirming Manchester City would play the remainder of the game with 10 players.

With the man advantage, Manchester United were able to take comfortable control of possession. However, this dominance failed to translate into goals, as City's defensive line remained organised and compact.

One of United's best chances came from a Marcus Rashford free kick which struck the goalpost. At the other end, City looked to operate on the counter attack, though Foden's dismissal left them struggling to create clear cut opportunities.

No goals were scored before the half time break, with both sides heading into the dressing rooms locked at 0-0.

At the start of the second half, Maresca made a substitution, bringing on Iliman Ndiaye in place of Rayan Cherki.

Manchester United ramped up their pressure as they looked to capitalise on their extra man. Kobbie Mainoo came close to opening the scoring for the hosts with a powerful strike, only for his effort to also crash against City's goalframe.

Against the run of play, it was Manchester City who made the breakthrough in the 60th minute.

Josko Gvardiol delivered a cross from the left flank into the penalty area. Erling Haaland, perfectly positioned, met the delivery and fired the ball past the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The goal was immediately checked by VAR for a potential offside. Following the review, Haaland's strike was awarded, giving City a 1-0 lead.

Manchester City grew in confidence after taking the lead. Seven minutes later, Enzo Fernandez almost doubled their advantage.

The City midfielder unleashed a shot from outside the penalty area, but his effort was denied by the woodwork behind Senne Lammens' goal.

Manchester United refused to give up, and continued to push for an equaliser right until the final minutes. However, City's backline maintained their focus, successfully absorbing every wave of pressure from the home side.

United's last clear chance arrived in stoppage time. Mbeumo ran onto a through ball from Fernandes, putting him one on one with Gianluigi Donnarumma.

But the Manchester City goalkeeper reacted sharply, making an excellent save to deny Mbeumo's finishing attempt.

No further goals were scored before the full time whistle. Manchester City secured the 1-0 victory and all three points at Old Trafford, despite having played with 10 men for almost the entire match since the first half.
