Manchester City made a major blockbuster move ahead of the 2026 summer transfer window deadline. The Citizens have officially completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a staggering transfer fee of 125 million pounds, equivalent to approximately IDR 2.99 trillion.

Chelsea confirmed the departure of the Argentine international midfielder via the club's official website. The transfer was finalised just hours before the window shut in the early hours of WIB on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

"Enzo Fernandez has officially joined Premier League side Manchester City on a permanent transfer," read Chelsea's official announcement.

According to The Athletic reports, Manchester City paid the full 125 million pound fee to secure Fernandez's services. This valuation places Fernandez among the most expensive transfer signings in the entire history of the Premier League.

The 25-year-old's transfer fee matches the existing record set by Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for the same 125 million pound sum last season.

Enzo Fernandez Reunites With Enzo Maresca

Fernandez's move to Manchester City is heavily tied to Enzo Maresca, the Italian head coach now leading Manchester City following Pep Guardiola's exit.

Maresca previously worked directly with Fernandez during their shared tenure at Chelsea.

The pair built a close working relationship within Chelsea's project before Maresca departed the club earlier this calendar year.

Following Maresca's exit, sources reported Fernandez became unsettled at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder, who Chelsea originally signed from Benfica back in 2023, had already publicly signalled his desire to leave the club.

He had also previously received formal disciplinary sanctions from the club over an on and off field controversy.

Left Out Of Xabi Alonso's Squad Plans

The arrival of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea's new head coach removed any remaining doubt over Fernandez's future at the club.

Alonso did not include the Argentine midfielder in his core first team plans. Fernandez was omitted entirely from Chelsea's matchday squads for the final two fixtures before his transfer was completed.

This situation cleared the path for Manchester City to formalise their offer.

City had an urgent requirement for midfield reinforcements after entering their new post-Guardiola era under Maresca, compounded by Rodri's recent transfer to Barcelona.

Fernandez had been identified as Maresca's number one priority target to strengthen the engine room.

Fernandez Leaves Chelsea After 171 Senior Appearances

Fernandez originally joined Chelsea in 2023 when the London club signed him from Portuguese side Benfica.

Across more than three full seasons at Stamford Bridge, Fernandez registered 171 senior appearances and scored 31 goals across all competitive competitions.

He was part of the Chelsea squad that lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Fernandez's spell at Chelsea ultimately ended prematurely, well before the end of his original contract term.

"We extend our gratitude to Enzo for all his dedication and commitment during his time representing Chelsea," concluded the club's official farewell statement.

Fernandez now embarks on a brand new career chapter with Manchester City.
