Sarangan Lake, located in Magetan Regency, East Java, has captured the attention of travellers. This time it is not gaining traction solely for its lake and mountain scenery: a photography spot framed by bougainvillea flowers has gone viral on social media, with visitors widely noting its striking resemblance to Italy's Lake Como.

The Magetan Regency Culture and Tourism Office confirmed that the viral popularity of this spot has driven a significant rise in visitor numbers to one of the region's flagship tourist destinations.

Yosef Cahyo Wibawanto, Head of Tourism Destinations Division at Magetan's Culture and Tourism Office, stated that photos and videos from the location are now being shared widely across all major social media platforms.

"It is this bougainvillea photo spot that went viral. Many tourists have commented that this location looks just like Lake Como in Italy," Yosef stated during an interview in Magetan on Monday.

Sarangan Lake Daily Visitor Counts Reach 9,000

The impact of this viral trend is clearly visible in arrival statistics for Sarangan Lake, most noticeably during weekends.

According to official data from Magetan Culture and Tourism Office, weekend daily visitor numbers now peak at 9,000 people. This represents more than a 100% increase from baseline normal levels, which previously averaged approximately 4,000 visitors per day.

This surge demonstrates how an unassuming small location can completely transform the public profile of an entire tourist destination once it gains widespread social media attention.

Yosef observed that this development also serves as a clear example of the powerful role social media plays in modern tourism promotion.

Organic, unsponsored sharing of photos and videos by ordinary visitors steadily built recognition for the bougainvillea spot, with other travellers subsequently visiting out of curiosity to capture the same experience.

Bougainvillea Flowers Emerge As Major Tourist Draw

Notably, this popular spot was not created as a large purpose-built tourist attraction. Its photogenic appearance came instead from the creativity of site managers and local residents, who arranged bougainvillea planting to form an artistic photographic backdrop.

The combination of the bright flower blooms, Sarangan Lake views, surrounding hillside villas and mountain backdrop creates a scene that visitors have repeatedly compared to the Lake Como region.

For travellers, this location offers a unique visual experience: one single spot combines intact natural scenery with settled residential landscape that works perfectly for photography.

Maya Yuniasti, a visitor from Wonogiri, Central Java, explained she travelled to the site after seeing it trend across social media.

She noted that the appeal goes far beyond just the flowers, and comes from the full combined panorama of the area.

"Everything is beautiful here. There is the lake, the villas, the mountains. It is all very lovely, it really does feel like Lake Como in Italy," Maya commented.

After taking photos at the spot, Maya stated she was fully satisfied and intends to return to Sarangan Lake for future visits.

Supervision Increased Following Visitor Surge

The sharp rise in arrivals has required adjustments to site management. The Magetan Regional Government, alongside site operators and field staff, have stepped up monitoring operations, particularly at locations at risk of overcrowding.

Regular patrols are being conducted to prevent traffic congestion, while also maintaining visitor safety and comfort.

Yosef assured that tourists can visit the Sarangan area with confidence, as officers carry out scheduled and roving monitoring across the entire site.

"We are maintaining active continuous patrols to preserve a safe, comfortable environment for all visitors," he confirmed.

Tourism Authority Encourages Full Exploration Of Sarangan Area

Magetan's Culture and Tourism Office has expressed hope that the viral bougainvillea spot will not remain just a short-lived trend. Local authorities aim for this visitor surge to also bring benefits to other tourist sites and local tourism businesses across the wider Sarangan area.

For this reason, visitors are being encouraged not to limit their trip only to this single photography location.

Multiple other attractions in the area are recommended for visitor itineraries, including Wahyu Lake and Tirto Sari Waterfall. Travellers are also invited to visit local souvenir centres and additional destinations across both Sarangan and the broader Magetan region.

This strategy is designed to ensure the economic benefits from increased visitor numbers are distributed widely throughout the local community.

Food stalls, souvenir vendors, accommodation providers, transport services and all other local business operators stand to gain when tourists extend the total duration of their visit.

The bougainvillea spot phenomenon illustrates how modern tourism trends often emerge organically from ordinary visitor experiences: one attractive photograph shared on social media can quickly become an informal recommendation for thousands of other users.

In only a short period, a previously overlooked corner of Sarangan Lake has been transformed into a major new tourist draw.
