Persib Bandung to Face Manila Digger, Igor Tolic Urges the Players to Beware of Counterattacks

Persib Bandung head coach Igor Tolic has predicted that Manila Digger's playing style will not change significantly when the two sides meet in the AFC Champions League (ACL) II play-off match at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung Regency, on Monday 31 August 2026.

The Philippine representative arrives with a different squad composition compared to last season. Several long-serving players have been released, while new signings have been brought in to compete this campaign.

However, Igor notes that changes to playing personnel do not automatically alter the core playing identity of a team.

The Croatian head coach expects Manila Digger will continue to rely on a compact defensive block, physical intensity, raw pace, and effective counter-attacking capability.

"They have let go of some players and brought in new arrivals. They are preparing specifically to face us, and they have travelled here with the clear goal of progressing further in the ACL," Igor stated via the club's official website on Friday.

Persib Drawing Lessons From Last Season's Encounter

Persib previously faced Manila Digger during the 2025/2026 ACL II play-off round.

On that occasion, Maung Bandung secured a 2-1 victory at Gelora Bandung Lautan Api Stadium, Bandung, on 13 August 2025.

The win was secured via an own goal from Michael Asong and a finished strike from Uilliam Barros.

Despite claiming victory, Igor recalled the fixture was far from straightforward. Manila Digger created multiple dangerous chances, particularly in the opening exchanges, before Persib found their rhythm to take control of the match.

"As I remember we won 2-1 last year, but it was never an easy game. They created a number of good opportunities early on before we managed to find the net and take the win. I hope we can secure a similarly positive result this time around," Igor explained.

This prior experience is the reason Persib will not make the mistake of relying solely on their previous meeting result.

While last season's victory has given the squad confidence, it provides absolutely no guarantee that this upcoming fixture will play out along the same pattern.

Beware The Compact Defence And Counter-Attack Threat

According to Igor, Persib must prepare for the likelihood that Manila Digger will once again deploy this exact tactical approach.

A deep, organised defensive block is expected to form the foundation of the Philippine side's game plan. Upon winning back possession, they will immediately look to utilise their players' pace to exploit open space behind the defensive line.

"We are anticipating a very similar set up to what we faced last year: tight defensive organisation, physically strong players, good pace, and a constant counter-attack threat," he stated.

Igor has instructed his squad to perform with zero lapses in concentration for this fixture, which will decide Persib's entire campaign in the Asian continental competition.

Group E Ticket On The Line

This clash against Manila Digger carries enormous significance for Persib.

A victory will seal Igor Tolic's side a confirmed spot in the 2026/2027 ACL II group stage. Should they progress, Maung Bandung will be placed in Group E alongside FC Seoul, Melbourne City FC, and The Cong-Viettel.

Major challenges certainly await should they qualify. First however, Persib must complete the job waiting for them at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium.
