Mount Semeru hiking trails are closed, while the Ranu Regulo tourist area remains safe.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Central Office (BB TNBTS) has fully closed all Mount Semeru hiking trails in East Java following a wildfire that broke out at Ranu Kembang Block on Wednesday. The fire is the primary reason for the closure, as the ignition point is located directly along the hiking route.

This policy is enforced to ensure fire containment operations and visitor evacuation procedures can be carried out safely.

BB TNBTS Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha stated that the wildfire along the hiking path meant all access leading to Semeru's summit had to be completely shut down.

"The forest fire that occurred on 26 August 2026 at Ranu Kembang Block, adjacent to the Mount Semeru hiking trails, has resulted in a full total closure of all hiking routes up the mountain," stated Rudi, the common nickname for Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha.

Hiking Trails Closed Indefinitely

Unlike previous temporary closures with a confirmed reopening schedule, BB TNBTS has not set an end date for this suspension of hiking activities.

Rudi explained the closure will remain in effect until the area is declared safe. This decision also supports firefighting efforts and evacuation of visitors who are still inside the Semeru reserve area.

Safety and security are being prioritised throughout the fire response operation.

Due to the full trail closure, hikers who have already purchased tickets will be offered the option for a full refund or to reschedule their hike.

BB TNBTS has prepared dedicated services for ticket refunds as well as hiking schedule rebookings once trails are reopened.

While all Mount Semeru hiking routes are closed, not all tourist activities within the national park have been affected by the wildfire.

BB TNBTS confirmed visitor operations at Ranu Regulo will continue normally, as this location has not been directly impacted by the fire at Ranu Kembang Block.

Malang-Lumajang Road Remains Open

The wildfire at Ranu Kembang Block has not disrupted the overland transport route between Malang and Lumajang.

Rudi confirmed members of the public may still use this road, which passes through Poncokusumo District (Malang) and Senduro District (Lumajang).

"The Malang-Lumajang access route running via Poncokusumo District (Malang) and Senduro District (Lumajang) remains fully passable," he stated.

This means the closure of Mount Semeru hiking trails does not affect surrounding overland access roads.

That said, the fire situation remains under close monitoring, as the risk of the blaze spreading and endangering visitors still requires active mitigation.

Visitors Reminded Against Open Flame Activities

BB TNBTS has issued an appeal to all tourists and tourism service providers to assist in protecting the reserve from fire hazards.

Visitors are requested to refrain from any activity that could create an ignition source, particularly while environmental conditions are at high fire risk.

"This includes avoiding activities that can produce open flame: this applies to campfires, fireworks, flares, burning waste, and any other action that carries wildfire ignition risk," he concluded.
