Following in Taufik Hidayat's footsteps, Jonatan Christie has become the world's number one men's singles badminton player.

Jonatan Christie has officially notched one of the greatest achievements of his career. The Indonesian badminton player has claimed the top spot in the men's singles world rankings following the Badminton World Federation (BWF) release of its latest updated ranking list.

For Jonatan, this milestone is far more than just a two-position climb from third place. At 28 years old, this marks the very first time in his entire career that he has attained the status of world number one men's singles player.

With a total of 87,631 points, Jonatan sits ahead of France's Christo Popov in second place, who holds 87,002 points. This narrow 629 point gap reflects just how fierce the competition is at the top of the BWF rankings.

For now however, Jonatan Christie's name stands at the very highest position.

Waiting Since Reaching Second Place in 2023

Before breaking through to the world number one spot, Jonatan's highest previous BWF ranking was second place, which he achieved on 31 January 2023 after winning the Indonesia Masters.

At that time, Jonatan had already demonstrated that he was capable of competing against the world's elite badminton players.

Three years after recording that career best ranking, Jonatan has finally moved one step higher to become the world's top ranked player.

This ranking update for Jonatan came following the conclusion of the 2026 BWF World Championships in New Delhi, India on Sunday 23 August.

Eliminated in the Round of 16, Yet Still Climbed To The Top

Remarkably, Jonatan claimed the world number one position despite his run at the 2026 BWF World Championships not going as planned.

He was knocked out in the round of 16 after losing to Denmark's Rasmus Gemke in a three-game match, with the final score 21-11, 13-21, 18-21.

However, ranking movements are not determined solely by one player's results. The performances of his rivals at the World Championships cleared the path for Jonatan to jump to the top position.

Extremely Tight Competition At The Top Of The Rankings

Jonatan holds only a 629 point lead over Christo Popov. The French player is his closest challenger with 87,002 points. Behind them, Thai men's singles player Kunlavut Vitidsarn occupies third place with 86,915 points.

The competition grows even tighter with Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen sitting in fourth position on 86,580 points, following his bronze medal win at the 2026 BWF World Championships.

Meanwhile Anders Antonsen holds fifth place with 85,405 points.

Shi Yu Qi, who previously occupied the world number one ranking, suffered a sharp drop down to sixth place after exiting the World Championships in the early rounds.

This achievement by Jonatan holds special significance for Indonesian badminton.

He is the first Indonesian men's singles player to hold the world number one position since Taufik Hidayat back in 2000.

These two players from different generations are now etched in Indonesian badminton history as men's singles athletes who have reached the very top of the world rankings.

For Jonatan, this milestone caps off a career that has already been decorated with a number of prestigious titles.

His previous honours include gold at the 2018 Asian Games, winning the 2024 All England Open, and being part of the Indonesian squad that lifted the Thomas Cup in 2020.
