The continuous eruption of Anak Krakatau has ended, tourists are requested to remain away from the active crater.

Jakarta - The continuous eruption episode of Anak Krakatau Volcano in the Sunda Strait has concluded after lasting approximately 25 hours. Despite this reduced activity, the Geological Agency still assesses that the potential for follow-up eruptions in the coming period remains significantly high.

Lana Saria, Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), stated that this continuous eruption episode commenced on Friday (4/9) at 23.07 WIB and ended on Sunday (6/9) at 00.04 WIB.

"Following the conclusion of this episode, the volcanic activity of Anak Krakatau has transitioned back to characteristic Strombolian eruption patterns, marked by the recording of three Strombolian eruption earthquakes," Lana stated in the Anak Krakatau activity progress evaluation report received in Jakarta on Monday, 07 September 2026.

According to the Geological Agency, the return of Anak Krakatau's activity to Strombolian eruption characteristics confirms the end of the long-duration continuous eruption phase. However, this condition does not mean volcanic activity is fully safe, as the probability of subsequent eruptions still remains high.

Volcanic Activity Still Being Detected

Based on instrumental observations recorded between 6-7 September 2026, the Geological Agency documented three eruption earthquakes, nine emission earthquakes, 93 low-frequency earthquakes, 98 hybrid/multi-phase earthquakes, four continuous tremor events, and one shallow volcanic earthquake.

The RSAM (Real-time Seismic Amplitude Measurement) amplitude averaging graph, which had spiked sharply on 5 September 2026, has also shown a downward trend starting 6 September.

Meanwhile, tiltmeter deformation data from the Tanjung Station indicates slight inflation occurring since early August 2026. Observations from Lava93 Station on the other hand show relatively stable patterns.

Following this evaluation, the Geological Agency is maintaining the activity status of Anak Krakatau Volcano at Level III (Alert).

Visitors Advised Not To Approach The Crater

This situation requires attention from local residents and visitors operating within the Sunda Strait area. The Geological Agency recommends that tourists, hikers, and local communities refrain from approaching or conducting any activities within a 3 kilometre radius of the active crater.

This restriction is enforced to mitigate various volcanic hazards including incandescent rock ejecta, pyroclastic flows, lava flows, and heavy ash fall.

For tourists planning trips or recreational activities around the Sunda Strait region, updates on Anak Krakatau's status must be a primary consideration. All tourist activities are also advised to comply with safety regulations and recommendations issued by the relevant authorities.

Cited from ANTARA News Agency, the Geological Agency also urged residents along the Banten and Lampung coastlines to remain calm and disregard hoax information regarding tsunami risks arising from the eruption.

Members of the public conducting outdoor activities are also advised to wear face masks to prevent respiratory irritation caused by volcanic ash exposure.
