Real Madrid suffered their first defeat under Jose Mourinho in the 2026/2027 La Liga season. Los Blancos fell 0-1 to Real Betis at the Estadio de la Cartuja, early Saturday morning WIB. Despite dominating play, Madrid failed to find the back of the net, even from the penalty spot.

Troy Parrott was the difference maker. The Irish Betis striker scored in the 81st minute to secure all three points from a match that Madrid controlled for the vast majority of proceedings.

Kylian Mbappe had a late chance to salvage a result for Madrid. However, his 93rd minute penalty kick was denied by Alex Valles.

This defeat brings an end to Madrid's three-match winning run at the start of the season. As a consequence, they failed to displace Barcelona from the top of the league standings.

Madrid collected nine points and remain in second position. They sit level on points with Betis, who climbed up to third place in the table.

Mourinho Disappointed With Madrid Defeat

This loss marks the first time Mourinho has dropped points in La Liga this season. His side won their previous three fixtures, but Madrid's dominance on this occasion was not enough to return home with three points.

Mourinho still gave appreciation to his squad. He assessed that Madrid had created numerous opportunities to win the match.

"In my view, the players performed well. Sometimes you lose and you do not know the cause, sometimes you lose and you cannot even explain how it happened. Our centre backs controlled every area, pushed forward actively, and we had plenty of goalscoring chances," Mourinho was quoted by Diario AS.

The Portuguese head coach stated Madrid should have won the game.

"Had this match ended in a draw we would already have been deeply frustrated, because we did absolutely everything. So just imagine how we feel right now after losing," he added.

Regarding the two critical moments - Mbappe's missed penalty and Carlos Espi's disallowed goal - Mourinho chose not to judge the referee's decisions.

"I cannot comment on that," Mourinho stated.

Mourinho also did not complain about the conduct of Betis players on the pitch against his side. He noted that the opposition simply did everything they were capable of.

"We deserved to win, but that fact alone does not automatically guarantee you points. Congratulations to Betis, they targeted a draw first and then got the fortune they needed," he said.

This defeat against Betis serves as an early warning for Mourinho and Real Madrid. Ball domination, 20 total shots and seven efforts on target count for nothing when the opposition capitalise on their single opening to score, then hold firm until the final whistle.
